I will be in Savannah in a few weeks. I'll be staying at The Alida Hotel on Savannah River Street and writing an article about it for LuxeBeatMag.com, where I have a column.
Oops Julie, please double check with Pink House. Be sure your table is either on the parlor floor or if upstairs, make sure your table is in room at the front of the room.
Also Goose Feathers is a delightful restaurant across the square for a breakfast or brunch. Just across square from hotel.
Julie, it’s hard to narrow the list to a few “must-see” places. Let me think on it. The problem is that Savannah has such variety. We have history, architecture, the largest historical district in the US. We have rivers, marshes, oceans and beaches. I’ll send you a list. I would suggest taking one of the tours but the guides of today are not well trained and like to entertain you rather than educate you. I love the Alida hotel.
We will only be in Savannah for 2 days because we have so much of the South to see. My husband wants to see plantations and Civil War sites. I want to see public art. Does that narrow things a little?
Julie, I wish you could stay longer. I suggest that you visit the Green Meldrim House. That’s the house where General Sherman stayed during the occupation of Savannah. From there he wrote a letter to President Lincoln saying, “I give you as a Christmas gift the city of Savannah.” Sherman spared Savannah on his march to the sea. He burned Atlanta to the ground before arriving in Savannah and he did the same to Columbia, SC, after he left here. Lots of history there and explains why our historic district remains in tact.
Very few of the original plantation houses remain in this vicinity. You’ll see information on Wormsloe Plantation here but only parts of the foundation of the original small dwelling remain. The current house dates from the 19th century and is the private home of descendants of Noble Jones who was given the site by King George 11. You can’t even see the house from the drive which is still lined by our majestic oaks. That drive is magnificent.
There are a few forts in the area but are from the Revolutionary War.
I think the Visitors Center still has a wonderful film on the history of Savannah.
The Pink House is great place to eat but you need to make reservations well in advance. If interested, call as soon as you can.
That’s a lot to chew on but only the tip of the iceberg.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Lydia
P.S. You might walk through Colonial Park Cemetery where Sherman’s camped out while in the city. There’s more history there.
I got a reservation at 2:30 pm at The Olde Pink House! The only choices were 2 and 2:30, so I grabbed it. It's a short walk to our hotel, the cemetery, the Visitor Center, and the Green Meldrim House. Thanks for these recommendations, Lydia. I appreciate it and I know my husband will, too.

I made the reservation with Open Table. I just went in and updated the reservation with the special request that you recommended.
I made a note about Goose Feathers for breakfast or brunch. It looks like I’m going to have a great breakfast!
Thanks, Lydia!
Julie, there’s such good restaurants here but not to worry about the calories. You’ll walk it all off.
I intend to do so.
I just sent you a reply. I wonder where it went???
I got your reply. Thanks, Lydia.

I'm glad you know The Alida.
